25m x 9m Heated Indoor Swimming Pool 29°C.
Small Boat Harbour, Port Alfred, Contact: 046 624 5004
Numerous schools , tertiary institutions and individuals use the pool throughout the year for health & fitness, training for open water events, ie Ironman, Midmar Mile, our own Kowie River Mile and squad training in preparation for galas. NSRI members also often frequent the pool in order to keep themselves in peak condition..
Our little swimmers receive swimming lessons on a weekly basis throughout the year which ensures their safety in the holiday seasons. It gives all the family members peace of mind. The swimming instructors who use the pool to teach swimming are all suitably qualified and have had great success in teaching many children to swim.
This starts from age of 6 months. The aim is to promote confidence and water safety in children. Orientation familiarises babies and younger children with water and lays the foundation for a happy association with water.
Outdoor Focus uses the swimming centre to teach and train aspirant scuba divers through the training agency of SSI (Scuba Schools International). The courses start from SSI Openwater Diver and continue through a number of stages to scuba instructor level. Students are taught and drilled in all skills needed to create a firm foundation for them to become divers before attempting the open ocean.
As the SOETBEV SWIMMING CENTRE is the only public heated indoor swimming pool in this area, it played an important role in the Department of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture’s decision to host the 2012 National Youth Camp in Port Alfred for the Eastern Cape leg of the event. Basic waterman skills formed part of the many other activities organised and facilitated by Outdoor Focus.
Aqua aerobics and hydrotherapy
Local doctors and physiotherapists refer their patients with sports injuries, hip and knee replacements to the swimming pool to exercise in the warm water as it speeds up the healing process.
It’s not just your cardiovascular system that stands to benefit from an aqua aerobics work out. Water exercise is also beneficial to your internal organs and lymphatic system. Hydrostatic pressure, turbulence and buoyancy assist in the flow of blood back to the heart and lymphatic drainage. These extra benefits explain why participants feel so good after a class. The body is refreshed rather than exhausted contributing to this is the affect of water massaging your muscles as you exercise.
SSI Southern Africa
SSI Southern Africa is now based in Port Alfred. The SSI Swim Schools Programme will be utilizing the SOETBEV SWIMMING CENTRE facility for training SSI Swimming Instructors.
Project Status: Registered Service Providers
In November 2012, the Soetbev Swimming Centre as well as, Albany Aquatics, registered with Nelson Mandela Bay Aquatics and Swim South Africa, was brought in under the umbrella of Voh. This enables them to do much needed fundraising for the support and development of swimming, water safety, training of swimming instructors and lifesavers.
Voh registered as service providers to the Department of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture. DSRAC have appointed Albany Aquatics as an umbrella club for aquatic sports in the Saartjie Baardman (Cacadu) District and supports them with Club Development.
